Alternative options to consider ↪ Nordic walking (walking with poles) Walking with poles engages both the upper and lower limbs while also improving balance control. Several studies have shown that Nordic walking is as effective — or more effective than — standard walking programs for improving walking distance and cardiorespiratory fitness¹¹–¹². ↪ Stationary cycling Clinical guidelines recommend stationary cycling for patients who are unable to walk.³ The recommendations for structuring a stationary cycling exercise program are the same as those for a walking program.
