3 ↪ Practical Guide about Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) GLOSSARY Ankle-brachial index: Ratio between blood pressure at the ankle and at the arm. Artery: A blood vessel which transports oxygen-rich blood to the organs. Atherosclerosis: Appearance of fatty deposits in the arteries. High blood pressure: Abnormal elevation of pressure in the blood circulating in the arteries. Hyperlipidemia: A high level of lipids in the blood (excessive fat), including cholesterol and triglycerides. Intermittent claudication: Lameness. May be caused by cramping pain in the calf when walking due to peripheral artery disease. Type 2 diabetes: A disease in which regulation of sugar (glucose) in the blood does not work very well. In some individuals, the pancreas cells produce insufficient insulin. Vein: A blood vessel which transports oxygen- depleted blood to the heart.
